Creamy dairy free cashew cream recipe made from soaked raw cashews. A versatile plant based substitute for coconut milk, cheesecake filling, or savory sauces, rich and naturally sweet.
Being dairy free, I tend to use a lot of coconut milk to replace dairy. I use coconut milk regularly in smoothies, baking, and even savory dishes. Last night, for example, I made lamb and liver bolognese and used coconut milk in place of dairy. Gave it a nice richness, mmmm, and doesn’t taste at all coconutty for those who take issue with that.
I came across a cashew cream recipe and decided to give it a go to replace coconut milk every once in a while. HOLY WOW IT IS DELICIOUS. I intended to use it for my morning smoothie, but I ate so much of it I’m not hungry anymore (please let me be hungry soon so I can eat more). You can use this as a base for dairy free cheesecake (just make it thicker), cream cheese, or top desserts with it.
Here’s what to do:
Dairy Free Cashew Cream
Soak 1 cup of raw cashews overnight in filtered water (refrigerate overnight).
Drain, then put in blender with ~1/2 cup filtered water, ~1/2 tsp vanilla, dash of cinnamon, touch of honey if desired (I think it’s sweet enough as is).
Blend. You could really add any sweet spices you like (cardamom, nutmeg, etc).
Add more water if you want it thinner. I like mine thick.
Great substitution for any dairy cream. I’ve made this with almonds too. You can make it savory by adding the juice of a lemon and a splash apple cider vinegar. Let me know if you make it and how you use it!
Frequently Asked Questions
How do you make dairy free cashew cream at home?
Soak raw cashews overnight in filtered water in the refrigerator to soften them. Drain and blend with fresh water, vanilla, cinnamon, and optional honey until smooth. Adjust liquid for desired thickness. The result is a rich, neutral dairy free cream alternative.
Why is soaking cashews important before blending?
Soaking hydrates cashews and softens plant fibers, allowing them to blend into a silky texture. This step improves digestibility and prevents a grainy consistency. Keeping them refrigerated during soaking maintains freshness and food safety.
Can cashew cream replace coconut milk in recipes?
Yes, cashew cream can substitute for coconut milk or heavy cream in many dishes. Its mild flavor makes it suitable for smoothies, soups, sauces, and baked goods without adding coconut taste. It delivers creamy texture while remaining dairy free.
What can cashew cream be used for besides smoothies?
Thickened cashew cream works as a base for dairy free cheesecake, creamy spreads, and dessert fillings. When thinned, it functions as pouring cream in soups or sauces. Its versatility makes it useful in both sweet and savory recipes.
How do you make cashew cream savory instead of sweet?
To create a savory version, omit sweet spices and add lemon juice and a small amount of apple cider vinegar. This produces a tangy flavor similar to cultured cream, suitable for pasta dishes, dressings, and savory baking.
Does cashew cream have a strong nut flavor?
Cashew cream has a mild and neutral taste when blended thoroughly. The flavor does not overpower other ingredients. Its natural creaminess allows it to integrate smoothly into desserts and savory meals alike.
Can other nuts be used to make dairy free cream?
Almonds and other soaked nuts can be blended to create similar dairy free creams. Texture may vary, but adjusting water content helps control thickness. Proper soaking improves smoothness and enhances blending performance.
