Secret Ingredient Chocolate Mousse

mousse

Creamy chocolate mousse made with avocado, cocoa, coconut cream, and maple syrup delivers healthy fats, antioxidants, and dairy free paleo dessert indulgence in minutes.

I have created the dream dessert: it’s super easy to make and filled with healthy fats and antioxidant rich cocoa. It is to die for! This chocolate mousse is also dairy and egg free for those who are sensitive. I like developing what I call “therapeutic treats,” which are delicious versions of your favorites without the junk, AND they have the added benefits of superfood nutrients. It’s the perfect guilt-free dessert or snack. This mousse has a secret ingredient that gives it its silky smooth texture and beneficial fats: Avocado! But don’t let that deter you; it does not taste like chocolate guacamole, I assure you.

This is the ideal treat to whip up when you want a little something decadent and chocolatey. You could double (or triple, or quadruple) the recipe to make for a crowd. No one will know it’s egg and dairy free and contains avocado!

Single Serving Chocolate Mousse (paleo, dairy free, egg free, refined sugar free)

Ingredients

1/2 ripe avocado
2 tbsp cocoa or cacao powder, or carob powder would work too if you don’t tolerate chocolate. I have also used chocolate protein powder to give this a protein boost. This one is my absolute favorite.
1-2 tbsp coconut cream (the cream from the top of a can of coconut milk that has been refrigerated). This brand of coconut milk is BPA-free.
1 tsp almond butter (optional, but gives it a nice richness)
2 tsp grade B maple syrup, or to taste
a splash of vanilla extract, maybe 1/8 tsp? I just added a small splash and didn’t measure.
pinch of sea salt

Refrigerate a can of coconut milk overnight ideally. If you didn’t do this, no worries. You can use coconut milk too, but use less, maybe start with 1-2 tsp and increase to your desired thickness. Halve an avocado and scoop out 1/2 into your food processor. I used my cuisinart mini-prep which was perfect for this job. Add all other ingredients and process til smooth and creamy. Add more coconut milk or cream to get the mousse to your desired thickness. Add more sweetener if desired. I like mine on the fairly unsweet side. You can also leave the sweetener out altogether. Eat & enjoy! Or you can refrigerate for later.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes this chocolate mousse a healthier dessert option?

This mousse uses avocado, cocoa, coconut cream, and maple syrup instead of dairy, eggs, and refined sugar. It delivers healthy fats, fiber, and antioxidants that support blood sugar balance and hormone health while still tasting rich and indulgent.

Does the avocado change the taste of the mousse?

No. The avocado creates a silky texture and adds beneficial fats, but the cocoa and vanilla mask its flavor. When blended fully, it tastes like classic chocolate mousse rather than avocado, making it ideal even for skeptical guests.

Is this mousse suitable for paleo or dairy free diets?

Yes. This recipe contains no dairy, eggs, or refined sugar, making it suitable for paleo, dairy free, and grain free eating. It relies on whole food ingredients that support cleaner dessert choices without common inflammatory triggers.

Can this mousse support stable energy levels?

Unlike traditional mousse made with sugar and cream, this version combines healthy fats and natural sweetener. The fats from avocado and coconut cream slow sugar absorption, helping reduce energy crashes and supporting steadier blood sugar levels.

Can I increase the protein in this chocolate mousse?

Yes. You can add a clean chocolate protein powder to boost protein content without affecting texture. This turns the mousse into a more balanced snack option that supports muscle repair and satiety while keeping it dairy free.

How should coconut cream be prepared for best texture?

Refrigerating a can of full fat coconut milk overnight allows the thick cream to separate. Using the solid cream portion creates a thicker mousse texture. If not chilled, use smaller amounts of liquid coconut milk to control consistency.

Can this recipe be doubled for entertaining?

Yes. The recipe scales easily for gatherings. Simply double or triple the ingredients and blend in batches if needed. Guests often cannot tell it is egg free, dairy free, or made with avocado, making it ideal for crowd friendly serving.
